Freshman QB DJ Lagway shared his thoughts about Coach Billy Napier’s vision for Florida Gators. Lagway, the nation's top quarterback recruit and Florida's most celebrated newcomer since Tim Tebow is ready to prove his doubters wrong.

Lagway, a five-star talent from Willis, Texas, is poised to become a college football star. Despite Coach Napier's 11-14 record over two seasons with the Gators, Lagway is certain that the team will make a deep run in their upcoming campaign. Having signed with the Gators in December, Lagway told On3 reporter Pete Nakos:

"With that situation, we’re going to come out there and do our thing. Coach Napier has prepared us and we all have that chip on our shoulder because we feel like we’re being disrespected this year. So, we’re all going to go out there and do our thing, take care of business and come out victorious."

On3 describes Lagway as a strong-armed, mobile quarterback reminiscent of Green Bay Packers' Jordan Love. He racked up numerous awards after throwing for 4,604 yards and 58 touchdowns as a senior, including the 2023 Bobby Dodd National Back of the Year and MaxPreps Player of the Year.

Lagway’s dual-threat abilities match the dynamic offense Napier plans to implement. However, the coach is still chasing a winning season, and facing the toughest schedule in the nation.

DJ Lagway might be a future Heisman Trophy candidate and a high NFL draft pick, and as per On3, Florida coach Billy Napier is thrilled to coach Lagway.

“He’s got unique ability – the size, the athleticism, the arm talent,” Napier said. “But probably the best thing about him is just the work ethic, the desire to learn, the perspective and understanding and awareness that he knows he’s got a lot of work to do to get better.
“Just to see him smiling and having a good time. He loves the game, and that was very apparent out there.”

Co-offensive coordinator Russ Callaway shared his first impressions of the athlete, saying:

“DJ, I’ll tell you what, first off he’s an unbelievable person, and he’s a special talent. … I think DJ is going to be a great player for the Gators and I’m excited to be a part of his journey.”

Quarterback Graham Mertz, who mentors Lagway, praised his efforts, saying Lagway is doing a great job with no ego and is eager to learn and grow.
