Kirby Smart's Georgia Bulldogs redeemed themselves with an epic performance in a 30-15 win over the Texas Longhorns in Austin on Saturday. The Bulldogs dominated the first half and were 23-0 up at halftime.
During the third quarter, Texas defensive back Jahdae Barron intercepted a pass by quarterback Carson Beck and returned it to Georgia's 9-yard line before a flag was thrown up for defensive pass interference. Texas fans threw bottles and debris on the field and after a five-minute delay, the call was overturned by the officials.
On Sunday, the Bulldogs' athletic director Josh Brooks released a statement on X highlighting his outrage at the manner in which the call by the officials was changed.
"As proud as I am of the resolve our team had, I am also equally disappointed and frustrated in some of the circumstances of our game Saturday night," Brooks wrote.
"I don't find it productive to publicly demean or embarrass officials or the conference office via social media. That would be no better than the physical action of throwing objects on the field.
"However, I will challenge the conference office on what happened and how it happened in the manner it did. Thankfully this did not cost our young men a hard-fought win," he added.
The Georgia athletics director questioned the circumstances surrounding the call being changed after Longhorns fans threw bottles on the field.
Georgia coach claims his team was almost "robbed"
During his postgame news conference, Kirby Smart was livid with the officials' decision to overturn the decision in the third quarter after the behavior of the Texas fans.
“Nobody gave us a chance,” Smart said. “Your whole network doubted us. Nobody believed us. And then they tried to rob us with calls, in this place. And these guys are so resilient.
“But I will say that now we’ve set a precedent that if you throw a bunch of stuff on the field and endanger athletes, that you have a chance to get your call reversed. That’s unfortunate because to me that’s dangerous. That’s not what we want. That’s not criticizing officials. That’s what happened.”
It seems the Georgia Bulldogs are not pleased with the officiating in a hostile away ground that could have potentially cost them an important victory.
