The Georgia Bulldogs were defeated by the Alabama Crimson Tide in Week 5 of college football. This is their first defeat in the regular season since 2020 and continues their struggles when playing against the Crimson Tide.
With this defeat, Kirby Smart now has a 1-6 record against Alabama. He spoke about this record in his post-game press conference, saying:
“I don’t know, what’s everybody else’s record against them, you know? Has anybody got one better than one and six, that’s played them six times? I don’t think so."
The Georgia Bulldogs and the Alabama Crimson Tide has been a frequent matchup in SEC Championship and College Football Playoff games. In fact, this is only the second time that Kirby Smart has faced the Crimson Tide in the regular season.
Smart's record against Alabama is not great, but the majority of these meetings have been for games that traditionally end with a trophy being given to the winners.
These games have always been between the two biggest teams, and this is where Alabama thrives.
However, as Smart said, has any SEC coach faced Alabama six times in a short period of time, where most of these games have been playoff games?
While his record against them does not help him, he has been able to get one win against them, and this was for the National Championship.
Kirby Smart blames himself for the Bulldogs' struggles
In his post-game press conference, Kirby Smart spoke about the numerous issues that the Bulldogs had, especially in the first quarter of the game.
During those 15 minutes, Alabama scored four touchdowns, taking advantage of an interception thrown by Bulldogs QB Carson Beck and generally poor offense from the Bulldogs.
In a reaction to this, Smart told the press conference:
"It was one hell of a game. Tale of two halves. Obviously, we were not really prepared and that falls on me. In the first half, we didn’t do a great job, especially defensively.
“But we also gave them short fields, and when you have a short field and a quarterback like (Jalen) Milroe, it creates a lot of tough times. I am extremely proud of our team."
Kirby Smart has taken responsibility for his team's early mistakes in the game. However, in the rest of the game, the Bulldogs came back from those 28 points down to nearly win this game, and at one point, did lead.
While this is another loss for Smart against the Crimson Tide, this is going to be a game that will be remembered forever. With this, Smart added another piece of history to his program and for College Football in general.
