Georgia had to do without the services of quarterback Carson Beck in the second half of the Bulldogs' 22-19 win over the Texas Longhorns in the SEC Championship game. Beck suffered a UCL injury in his elbow and was replaced by backup Gunner Stockton, although Beck returned for the final play to hand the ball to running back Trevor Etienne to win the game with a touchdown in overtime.
On Monday, On3 analyst Pete Nakos revealed Beck had undergone an MRI and is getting second opinions on the injury. Georgia fans will continue to wait for updates ahead of the Bulldogs' Jan. 1 Sugar Bowl clash against either the Notre Dame Fighting Irish or the Indiana Hoosiers.
Despite tallying 3,485 passing yards resulting in 28 touchdowns, Beck has had an inconsistent season with 12 interceptions. He has three games with three interceptions, which has worried fans as the CFP arrives.
Some fans argued the Bulldogs would be better off without Beck playing due to his inconsistent form this season.
"Georgia just got better," one fan tweeted.
"Gunner Stockton is better," another fan tweeted.
"Best thing that coulda happened to the Dawgs," one fan tweeted.
Beck expected to miss Sugar Bowl
According to WBS analyst Zach Klein, the Bulldogs are not confident Beck will be available for the Sugar Bowl clash against either the Indiana or Notre Dame.
"The feeling in talking with multiple sources in and around the Georgia Bulldog football program is QB Carson Beck has a UCL elbow injury and will miss the Sugar Bowl. Still waiting official MRI results from UGA."
During his weekly news conference, Georgia coach Kirby Smart spoke about losing Beck for the SEC championship game and being forced to use Stockton.
"There's not a great script for it," Smart said. "It certainly wasn't a great script last night to have to do it against the No. 1 team in the country on defense, and to have to do that at halftime was tough. You can't really get experience in this amount of time. There's not a lot we can do about that right now. So, we're just waiting to find out more information.
"He (Beck) was pretty somber. Tough deal for him in terms of not being able to go out there and finish in the second half, but he's also excited for his teammates; happy that it ended the way it did and ironically, he got to be on the field for that."
The Bulldogs have the advantage of having a first-round bye, which gives Beck additional time to return from injury. If Beck isn't able to play, Stockton has more time to get familiar with the offense and Georgia can build a gameplan with him in mind.
