The Georgia Bulldogs will face the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in the Sugar Bowl on Wednesday evening. This game will also double up as the second round of the College Football Playoff, giving it an extra layer of importance.
This game is likely to be a close one, with the Bulldogs currently being seen as
However, college football analyst Joel Klatt believes that the Bulldogs will struggle. He made his prediction for the Sugar Bowl on Saturday's Ryen Russillo Show.
"This Georgia team struggles against mobile quarterbacks...," Klatt said. (18:37 onwards) "We saw that with Haynes King, we saw that with Jalen Milroe. This matchup, to me, very much favors Notre Dame. If Beck was playing, I would’ve been picking Notre Dame, and now that Stockton is playing, I’m definitely picking Notre Dame."
Without hesitation, Klatt picks the Fighting Irish to defeat the Bulldogs and advance to the College Football Playoff semi-finals. There is good evidence to support this claim.
Notre Dame quarterback Riley Leonard has had mixed fortunes in the passing game, throwing for 2,293 yards and 17 touchdowns. However, he has been able to compensate for his occasional struggles in the position with his feet. This season, he has rushed for 751 yards and scored 15 touchdowns from 135 carries.
He is a mobile quarterback, and as we have seen this season, the Bulldogs struggle against mobile quarterbacks. This was most evident during the game with the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, which went into eight overtime periods. Yellow Jackets quarterback Haynes King used his mobility to keep Tech in the game and nearly cause a historic upset.
In this sense, Leonard is like King. If the Bulldogs's defense struggles against him, the Fighting Irish have a strong chance of victory.
Georgia's own quarterback could be a problem
It is not only the opposition quarterbacks's mobility that could be an issue for the Georgia Bulldogs.
Their own quarterback could also cause them problems. Usually, the Bulldogs would be led by Carson Beck. However, Beck suffered an arm injury in their SEC Championship game win over the Texas Longhorns. He has just had surgery on this arm and will miss the rest of the playoffs.
This means that Gunner Stockton will be the Bulldogs's starting quarterback.
Stockton has made sporadic appearances as the backup quarterback but has never started a game at the collegiate level. The Sugar Bowl will be his first start. Stockton could revel in this opportunity and lead the team to victory.
However, his inexperience may get the better, and the Bulldogs may lose in the second round.
