Former Georgia Bulldogs walk-on RB Gleaton Jones died on Friday after a fatal car crash. Following the accident, Jones was admitted to a Florida hospital where he underwent emergency surgery and was put in the ICU.
Jones was taken off life support after the surgery on Friday morning and died a while later. According to reports, he suffered a major brain injury, which was the cause of his death after the fatal accident.
Jones was a part of the Bulldogs roster that won the national championship in 2021.
Barstool UGA expressed their condolences on X.
"We are deeply saddened to share that former UGA walk-on running back Gleaton Jones has passed away in an ICU after a fatal car crash. Gleaton was an all-state football player at Deerfield-Windsor School and 2021 CFB National Champion. Prayers and condolences to his family," the post read.
The former Bulldogs RB went on a fishing trip to St. George Island last week. That is where the unfortunate incident occurred. Porterfield Methodist Church held a prayer service on Wednesday for the player's well-being.
Coming out of Deerfield Windsor School in Albany, Jones joined the Georgia Bulldogs as a walk-on in 2021. He did not, however, take the field for Kirby Smart. The Bulldogs went 14-1 and clinched the natty with a 33-18 victory over the Alabama Crimson Tide.
Gleaton Jones' family to hold memorial service next week
The family of the former Bulldogs RB released an obituary on Friday. They announced that Jones' memorial service would take place on Monday at 2 p.m. Gleaton's brother, Cole Jones, posted a comment on UGA Barstool's Instagram post on his passing.
"It is with heavy heart that we share the passing of former walk on Gleaton Jones. Gleaton proudly wore the red and black and will be remembered by us all. Fly high Gleaton."
He said Gleaton was a great individual and human being and that they shared a strong bond with each other.
"Gleats fights on. Damn good Dawg and damn good brother," Cole wrote.
Jones' celebration of life will be held at Wynfield Plantation in his hometown of Albany.
