In the second round of the College Football Playoff, the sixth-seeded Penn State Nittany Lions defeated the third-seeded Boise State Broncos 31-14 to advance to the semifinal. It was the fifth game of the CFP and the fifth straight blowout game.

College football analyst Jason Whitlock went on X after the game to criticize the CFP. He pointed out that there has not been an exciting game in the CFP yet.

"We're 5 duds into the college football playoff," he wrote.

Fans had a wide variety of reactions to this take from Whitlock. However, a good portion of fans believe the college football playoff should go back to only having four teams.

"Go back to four teams," one fan wrote.
"Too many teams. There is always a drop off in CFB after four or five," one fan commented.
"It’s going to be hit and miss, there will never be 12 deserving teams, ever. Should be 6 or 8 teams at the most. I will be shocked if a team outside of the B1G 18 or SEC ever wins it," one fan added.

However, not all fans were negative. Some believe that while the new 12-team college football playoff format is flawed, it is better than the old system and could produce exciting playoffs in future seasons.

"Yep. Sadly, that's how it played out. Doesn't mean this will be an every year thing." one fan wrote.
"Tonight’s game wasn’t so bad —it was turnovers and missed field goals, but I see what you mean. But it was competitive teams on the field," one fan commented.
"The games haven’t been amazing. But the fact they all mean something is. I wouldn’t have watched any of these bowls otherwise. Pretty big success, now just tweek the competitiveness somehow," one fan added.

Second round of the CFP continues on New Year's Day

While Jason Whitlock and many fans have been critical of the college football playoff thus far, it will have a few chances to redeem itself on New Year's Day. The final three games of the second round will take place on Wednesday.

Arizona State and Texas will face off in the opening game of the day at 1 p.m. ET in the Peach Bowl. The Rose Bowl, featuring Ohio State and Oregon at 5 p.m. ET, could be the most competitive meeting in the CFP thus far. The second round will conclude at 8:45 p.m. ET with the Sugar Bowl between Notre Dame and Georgia.
