The Colorado Buffaloes' defensive efforts this season have been credited to Warren Sapp, the senior quality control analyst/graduate assistant who was hired by head coach Deion Sanders in the offseason. After falling 13-0 behind in the first quarter of the Week 11 game against the Texas Tech Red Raiders, Colorado's defense stood tall for the rest of the game and the Buffs won 41-27.
Sanders, who has a close relationship with Sapp, posted a clip on Instagram of his fiery halftime speech to the defense which elicited the performance.
"This is how we act on a TV timeout. Them boys was TOO TURNT UP: Proud of the defense yesterday #CoachPrime @cubuffsfootball (posted by @deionsandersjr) @warrensapp @coach_vincentdancy."
The clip elicited an awed response from Hall of Famer Terrell Owens in the comment section.
"Got those boys HUMMIN on defense!!!"
Sapp part of Sanders' Colorado revolution
After the Buffaloes faded from a storming start to finish last season 4-8, Sanders promised to hire professionals with NFL experience to guide his team this season. One of those additions was Sapp, a four-time Pro Bowl selection during his 13-year NFL career.
During a news conference, Sapp revealed his enthusiasm at coaching under Coach Prime.
"For someone that never wanted to do this, I’m really addicted to this right now," Sapp said. "The babies have really given me a purpose in life. I’m enjoying it. He's (Coach Prime) leading the troops. When you work for a man like that, you follow him anywhere, because you know his heart is true and you know his meaning is there. And everything about him is genuine.
"He's the same man every time. My office is across from his, [he's] the same dude every morning. That music's playing, he'll come out with a little bounce in his step. Smile on his face, greet you with a good morning hug. I understand why, you know, so many people are looking at it with a side eye and different things because it's an unconventional way. It's Prime's way."
Sapp says his relationship with Colorado's defensive line coach Damione Lewis was instrumental in him taking the job. So far, his coaching has been an important factor in Colorado's impressive 2024 campaign.
