Notre Dame secured a crucial victory against Louisville on Saturday in a Week 5 encounter. After defeating Miami (OH) in Week 4, the Fighting Irish hosted the Cardinals in South Bend and came out with a 31-24 victory in a tie that was keenly contested by the two teams.
WWE icon and Notre Dame fan Sheamus was present at the Stadium on Saturday. This marked the team's third straight victory following the upset suffered at the hands of Northern Illinois in Week 2.
Sheamus shared the victory moments in South Bend on his social media pages on Sunday. The WWE legend was seen on the field following the game, ecstatic about the win against Louisville.
“Banger Mascot after Banger Mascot after… Great day Great win with,” Sheamus wrote.
Crucial win for Notre Dame before the bye week
The win against Louisville was crucial for Notre Dame as it offered the team some confidence before heading to its bye week. The shocking loss to Northern Illinois remains a debt on the Fighting Irish season and they can't afford to lose any more games so soon.
The win has elevated the Fighting Irish on the Week 6 AP Poll released on Sunday. Marcus Freeman’s team moved two places up to No. 14 following the win against Louisville on Saturday.
"Great win. Obviously wasn't perfect as everybody saw, we saw, our players saw. When you find a way to get it done when it matters most,” Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman said.
“Defense had to go out there and prevent them from scoring that last drive. A lot of confidence. I know the game gets close, but we have a lot of confidence in our defense. It's why I'm so aggressive as a coach on fourth down. You got a lot of confidence in your defense.”
Despite the win Notre Dame needs to improve
While Notre Dame secured the win on Saturday, it was clear the Irish are not there yet as a team. A brilliant performance in the first quarter played a crucial role in the win but the team still needs to improve and Marcus Freeman is aware of that.
“We know we got to improve,” Freeman said after the game. “Seven guaranteed games I told them. We're going to need everybody. Have to continue to get better, but it's a great feeling going into the bye week with a big win over a good Louisville team.”
The Fighting Irish will be out against Stanford in Week 7 after their bye-week. It's crucial for the team to return much stronger in order to boost their playoff hopes.
