Things are going from bad to worse for Mike Norvell and the Florida State Seminoles. Along with posting one of the worst records in college football through six games, winning just one game at the midway point of the season, the Seminoles are going cold on the recruiting trail.

On Thursday afternoon, four-star recruit Daylan McCutcheon privately flipped his commitment from Florida State to Texas, a crucial blow to Florida State's 2025 recruiting class. McCutcheon is ranked as the No. 26 receiver in the country and the No. 30 player in Texas by 247Sports.

Losing McCutcheon is making college football fans wonder if this is more of a Mike Norvell issue than a Florida State one. In a thread on Reddit, fans called Norvell's control of the Florida State football program into question.

"Has Mike Norvell lost control of the program," one fan questioned.
"The problem is this approach it's exactly why they're in the situation they're in right now," a second fan added, referring to Norvell's transfer portal-heavy recruiting strategy.

The Seminoles have been among the most active teams in the transfer portal over the last two seasons.

While the transfer portal can help teams bolster their roster, constructing a roster through the portal comes with flaws. In the same thread, fans pointed out the problems with Mike Norvell excessively dipping into the transfer portal.

"Currently has the 52nd-rated recruiting class (12th in the ACC). In fairness, the average is good, but still. Seems they might be going full-bore into the portal every year," a fan stated regarding Florida State's roster construction around the transfer portal.
"Rounding out a few slots in your roster with the portal can work great, filling up your roster with the portal really can't," another fan added in agreement.

Florida State will look to reload on the recruiting trail to improve their 2025 class following the loss of Daylan McCutcheon.

Mike Norvell, Seminoles land four-star offensive tackle

The Seminoles are well outside the top 25 recruiting classes in the country, boasting the 37th-best recruiting class for the 2025 class, per 247Sports. Florida State improved its ranking with the addition of four-star offensive tackle Mario Nash.

Nash announced his commitment just hours after Daylan McCutcheon had flipped to Texas. The four-star recruit from De Kalb, Mississippi, decommitted from Mississippi State on Monday afternoon.

While the pickup stops the bleeding for Florida State, it still has plenty of work to do on the recruiting trail after losing four commitments in the last two months.

Along with McCutcheon, four-star defensive linemen Myron Charles and Javion Hilson flipped from the Seminoles, as well as Malik Clark, another four-star receiver.
