Ever since, Bill Belichick signed his five-year, $50 million contract to become the next head coach of the North Carolina Tar Heels, the football world has been a whirlwind. Media personalities have found it challenging to talk about anything else, even with bowl season starting for many teams.
As Belichick starts his college football coaching career, many have compared him to Coach Prime in Colorado. Although they both entered college football with a lot of fanfare, insider Don Callahan spoke on Inside Carolina on Friday about the comparison and does not agree with it.
"And that's the other thing, people are comparing him to Deion Sanders," Callahan said. "I don't see the comparison. I'm open to kind of listening to where we see the comparison to what Deion has done at Colorado. The main thing is that Deion has benefited tremendously from having his two sons follow him whereve he goes, and have Travis Hunter who just won the Heisman, follow him.
"And not only does Travis play on offense, he also plays defense. Having those three go whereve you go is a huge asset. But beyond that, I don't see a whole lot of comparisons on what Deion has done from a roster management standpoint yet. I mean a lot of stuff we still haven't seen it with Belichick yet."
Bill Belichick gets his first college head coaching job
Bill Belichick has had a successful NFL coaching career, but he has never coached at the college level. While the NFL has higher standards of play, college football isn't easy to navigate either.
Callahan talked about how Deion Sanders has benefited tremendously from having his two sons and Travis Hunter follow him to Colorado. Bill Belichick will not have the luxury of any superstars following him to North Carolina. The team will probably get a recruitment bump because Belichick is there, but superstars will not follow him there out of loyalty.
Unlike in the NFL, Belichick will need to play a big role in recruitment. He will need to help recruit high school and transfer portal players. He cannot simply rely on coaching on the field, he needs to be a part of building the roster before it ever gets to the field. It will be interesting to see how Belichick adapts to this new role.
