Colorado Buffaloes coach Deion Sanders and graduate assistant coach Warren Sapp go a long way back having known each other since college. Both have accomplished a lot in football including winning Defensive Player of the Year, the Super Bowl and being enshrined into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
The Coach Prime documentary on Amazon Prime has a special mention for Coach Sapp. The Buffaloes coach shared his reason for bringing Sapp over to join him in Boulder.
"I brought him in to the house because I knew what he had inside of him because I've known him since he was in college," Sanders said. "These young men adore him. When they've seen what he's accomplished in the NFL when he played, first he gets in their mind by his gold jacket but he stays in there by his work ethic, by his knowledge, and by his wisdom."
In the documentary, Warren also shared his gratitude for Deion Sanders.
"For him to reach for me when nobody else was even looking my way, he told me 'I got a spot for you brother, I need you,'" Warren said.
How was Warren Sapp hired to Deion Sanders's coaching staff?
Deion Sanders wanted someone with a lot of experience to talk to his boys before the start of their 2023 season. It was Coach Prime's first season after he and his sons along with Travis Hunter left Jackson State to join the University of Colorado.
So, Coach Prime asked Warren Sapp to come to their facilities and give a pep talk to his team. Soon enough, Sapp found his next career move. After spending a day around Buffaloes players, he knew coaching them was his calling.
"For someone that never wanted to do this, I am really addicted to it right now," Sapp said in August. "The babies are really giving me a purpose in life, and I'm enjoying it."
Sapp's work in Colorado involves working alongside Buffs defensive line coach Damione Lewis and he has been given the role of senior quality control analyst (Defense).
"Warren Sapp has done more than a phenomenal job," Sanders said while reflecting on the Super Bowl winner's contribution. "Just the connectivity and just understanding the different type players and the layers they have ... You've got to know all those different types of personalities and he's done a great job of understanding the different personalities."
Warren Sapp and the Colorado Buffaloes turned it around in Coach Prime's second season in Boulder, finishing with a 9-4 record.
