The Indiana Hoosiers are gearing up to compete in the new 12-team College Football Playoff in head coach Curt Cignetti's debut campaign. The teams will be officially announced on Dec. 8 and Indiana is expecting a potential spot as an at-large team.
However, amidst the postseason preparations, the program has seen a change in its coaching staff. Co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Tino Sunseri is reportedly set to join the UCLA Bruins' coaching staff next season.
Sunseri joined the Hoosiers this season and has helped the team record an 11-1 campaign under Curt Cignetti. He will remain with the Hoosiers throughout the playoffs. After the postseason ends, he will part ways with Indiana for his new role at UCLA.
Fans were quick to share their thoughts on Tino Sunseri's departure from Indiana on social media:
"Yikes. He knows Indiana is a sinking ship," one fan said.
"Beautiful hire by UCLA," one fan added.
"He just went from 2 steps away from a HC offer, to 1 step away from a HC offer. A+ hire. Hate to see him leave. Wish him the best when he's not playing IU. Thanks for helping change the way IU sees football," another fan said.
"That was fast UCLA just fired their OC," a fan wrote after UCLA fired Eric Bieniemy.
"Why would you leave a top 10 progam to go to UCLA," one fan asked.
"Indiana and UCLA are the same thing. Leaving a top 10 school for that place? UCLA haven't been relevant since wow a long time," another fan said.
While the Hoosiers lost Sunseri, the program has managed to retain nine other assistant coaches on its 2024 staff with extended contracts. The program also recently agreed to a new eight-year contract worth $8 million annually with Curt Cignetti in November.
Curt Cignetti wins Big Ten Coach of the Year award in debut season with Hoosiers
On Tuesday, the conference's coaches and reporters honored Cignetti as the Big Ten Coach of the Year for his success with the Hoosiers. He also won this coveted award during his stints with IUP (2012), Elon (2017) and James Madison (2023).
With this new honor, Cignetti is the third Hoosiers coach after Tom Allen and Bill Mallory to win the coveted Coach of the Year award. Before Cignetti took over, the team could only manage a disappointing 3-9 campaign last season before they decided to fire Tom Allen.
This is also the Hoosiers' first season with double-digit wins to their name. It will be interesting to see if Cignetti can create history with the program and emerge as potential natty champions this season.
