Bill Belichick signed a five-year, $50 million contract to become the next head coach of the North Carolina Tar Heels in early December. However, only a month into his tenure as head coach, there are rumors that NFL teams, including the Las Vegas Raiders, have called him and asked about his interest in returning to the NFL.

On Thursday's episode of Pro Football Talk, NFL insider Chris Simms spoke about the rumors with Mike Florio. He talked about how he thinks Bill Belichick panicked in signing with UNC. He thinks he only did it because he did not get a job in the NFL last season and did not go another season without coaching (starts at 3:30):

"That would be the ultimate powerplay move if he did it. Certainly it would take a lot of criticism and would have to deal with that. I don't think Belichick cares though. He can certainly handle that. It does seem like he panicked, that's what it seems like.
"He wanted an understanding of, you're going to commit to me, you'll go through all the BS interviews and all that, but you're telling me I'm the guy. I think on top of that there's that aspect and anybody who's ever known Bill, nobody thinks college football is going to be something he really likes doing when it's all said and done."

Simms added:

"I think that's why most people that know him in the NFL, aka Tom Brady or whatever, they're gonna call and go, 'Hey are you interested? Because my 20 years with you would tell me that you have no clue or want to deal with college football.'
"I think that's why people like you and me and people who are invovled in the business are not sold on this whole aspect."

Bill Belichick could return to the NFL if his contract is bought out

Although Bill Belichick signed a contract with UNC, he is eligible to return to the NFL if his contract is bought out. His contract has a $10 million buyout clause if he leaves before June 1, 2025. If Bill Belichick decides to go back to the NFL, he could pay the buyout himself, or negotiate that the NFL team that hires him pays the buyout.

With Tom Brady becoming a minority owner of the Las Vegas Raiders, that is the team most people are looking at as a possible landing spot. However, five other NFL head coaching vacancies exist, including the Jets, Saints, Bears, Patriots and Jaguars.
