The No. 3 Penn State Nittany Lions under coach James Franklin could not get over the hump to defeat coach Dan Lanning's No. 1 Oregon in the Big Ten championship game on Saturday. The Lions lost 45-37 to give the Ducks their first title in their first year after joining from the Pac-12. Despite the loss, the Nittany Lions are still considered a lock to make the expanded college football playoffs due to their lofty ranking.
The Oregon band disrupted Franklin's postgame news conference by playing the fight song and the under-pressure Penn State coach did not mince his words when addressing the issue.
“I have no problem with them celebrating, but this is kind of a JV set-up,” Franklin said.
College football fans on X had mixed reactions to James Franklin's comments about the incident with the Oregon band.
"My god he’s one salty son of a b**ch," one fan said.
Some fans turned his words back on him.
"Hilarious coming from a JV coach," one fan said.
"All he’s gonna do is make excuses for being 1-18 against top 5 teams. no need to listen," another fan said.
"Penn State has been the “JV” of the elite Big Ten programs while James Franklin has been in charge. So I guess it’s fitting," one fan said.
James Franklin complains about lopsided officiating
James Franklin found himself in the hot seat after losing 20-13 to Ohio State in Week 10 of college football action for the eighth consecutive loss to the Buckeyes with criticism leveled against him for losing the big games.
Although the Penn State Nittany Lions ran the Oregon Ducks close in the game, they still fell short in another big game. During his postgame news conference, Franklin complained about the lopsided nature of officiating in the game.
“I don't want this to come off the wrong way, I give Oregon a ton of credit, but the penalties were pretty lopsided,” Franklin said. “There was a couple calls that we didn't get that I thought we should have. One of the calls that I thought was a critical point in the game was the two-minute drive with a catch on the sideline to Omari, I thought was a catch. Looking on the Jumbotron, it looked like it was a catch.
“You can't miss those calls in these types of games, especially when you've got replays. Just buzz down. It's too important.”
The Ducks were penalized three times for 24 yards while the Nittany Lions were penalized five times for 65 yards.
James Franklin will have to recollect the Penn State Nittany Lions ahead of the college football playoffs, which will be choked full of big games where he can get rid of the big game loser tag once and for all on the biggest stage in college football.
