Georgia Bulldogs quarterback Carson Beck entered the transfer portal on Thursday to the surprise of many Bulldogs fans. However, he did not stay in the portal for long as less than 24 later on Friday, he announced his commitment to Miami for his final season of NCAA eligibility. He reportedly signed a $4 million NIL deal to sign with the Hurricanes.
Beck transferred to the Hurricanes after injuring his elbow in the SEC Championship Game against Texas on Dec. 7, forcing him to miss the college football playoff. On Saturday's episode of their podcast 'Nightcap," former NFL players Shannon Sharpe and Chad 'Ocho' Johnson discussed the move. In the episode, Sharpe criticized the Hurricanes for bringing in Carson Beck to replace Cam Ward.
"I'm just trying to figure out. He's a turnover machine," Sharpe said. "Did they not see him last year. I mean really, I'm being truthful Ocho. I'm being very very truthful. Did they not see his body of work last season. If you saw his body of work, look if they giving out money like that I'm about to have me another kid." [1:50]
"You can be some butt sauce and get a million. If you're halfway good you get 2.5. If you damn good you gonna get four to six. I'm like damn. I ain't hating Miami. The Hurricanes are the Hurricanes. I'm just saying, and he's coming off an injury. He hurt his elbow. I don't know if it's significant, if he's gonna need surgery. Maybe rest will heal it."
Why did Carson Beck transfer to Miami?
While Carson Beck is getting criticism from Shannon Sharpe, he had an undeniably successful season with the Georgia Bulldogs. He completed 290 of 448 passing attempts for 3485 yards and 28 touchdowns in his second season as the starter for the Bulldogs. He had spent the past four seasons with Georgia.
The decision to transfer came as a surprise, as most experts expected him to stay in Georgia for his final season of NCAA eligibility. While it is difficult to pinpoint all the factors behind his decision, one clear influence is Beck's girlfriend, Hanna Cavinder, who is a star basketball player for the Miami Hurricanes.
By transferring to Miami, Carson Beck gets to go to the same school as his girlfriend. Additionally, Cam Ward proved last year that the Hurricanes can thrive under a good quarterback. While Beck has his flaws, he is certainly a top quarterback and capable of leading the Hurricanes to a successful season.
