Coach Prime and the Colorado Buffaloes suffered a loss at the hands of the Kansas Jayhawks in Week 13. This brought an end to their four-game winning streak while also putting a major dent in their hopes of competing for the Big 12 title and a spot in the new 12-team college football playoffs.
Coach Prime's son Shilo Sanders had an underwhelming performance against the Jayhawks. He managed to tally 13 total tackles for the Buffs but made countless mistakes, recording three penalties and a personal foul. While he was not the reason they lost, it certainly played a factor in the team's poor defensive performance.
Former NFL star Shannon Sharpe came forward with some advice for Shilo Sanders after his Week 13 performance. On the 'Nightcap' show, Sharpe talked about how Coach Prime's safety son could improve his game for the future.
"Shilo has to understand that everything can't be a big hit," Sharpe said. "He takes some terrible angles on.... If you take the wrong angle, you already outplayed because your momentum is not going to let you change directions. And he (Shilo) has to understand that everything can't be a big hit."
"Its okay to sometimes just get the guy on the ground. I know the crowd goes crazy. I know your sidelines goes crazy when you throw those big hits. But what it does it puts you in a vulnerable position because a lot of time you're gonna be out of position."
Shilo Sanders followed Coach Prime and his QB brother Shedeur from Jackson State last season. Despite a 4-8 season, he had a commendable debut, recording 67 tackles, four force fumbles, and one interception. Unfortunately, Shilo has been dealing with performance issues throughout this season.
Deion Sanders had called out Shilo's performance during their loss to Kansas State in Week 7, calling it 'horrible'. The senior safety made a gradual comeback in the games that followed. But this Week 13 showcase once again left fans disappointed.
Can Coach Prime lead Colorado to a Big 12 championship game?
After the loss to the Jayhawks, the Buffs have very slim chances of competing for the conference title. For a team that went 4-8 last season, they have already exceeded all expectations by securing Bowl game eligibility and being conference title contenders.
According to tie-breaker scenarios released by the Big 12, the Buffs have two ways of competing for the conference championship. The first option is to beat Oklahoma State next week and hope for two losses from Arizona State, BYU, and Iowa State.
The second option is to beat Oklahoma State and expect Houston and Texas Tech to win their final regular-season games.
The Colorado Buffaloes have definitely showcased their potential under Coach Prime this season. The question that remains is whether they end their 2024 campaign with a Bowl game appearance or aim big and compete for the Big 12 title and a spot in the playoffs.
