Ohio State quarterback Will Howard delivered a strong performance with 326 yards and three touchdowns against the No.3 Oregon Ducks (6-0, 3-0, Big 10). However, the match ended in a close 32-31 loss for the No.2 Buckeyes (5-1,2-1, Big 10), and fans' hopes for a last-minute comeback crumbled in the end.
For Howard, his last play will be remembered for all the wrong reasons. With the Buckeyes down 32-31 and just seconds remaining, Howard slid into the 25-yard line, running out the clock instead of giving his team a chance to set up for a game-winning field goal.
His failure in the final moments has left many pointing fingers at Howard. Take a look:
“He’s a third rate hack,” commented a Buckeyes fan.
A doubter questioned, “Wait, this college athlete is getting half a million in addition to a free degree?”
Another tweeted, "Will Howard pulls a Nico Iamanidiot!!! Haha"
A frustrated fan wrote, “Will Howard trying to run with 4 seconds left might be the worst play in college football history considering he’s getting 500k plus from Ohio state to play qb”
One comment stood out for its different take, writing, “He did that but the defense nearly gave up 500 yards but nobody is talking about that”
"Dirty secret apparently only KState fans knew was that Will Howard is just Kyle McCord," said another.
While the result was perhaps unexpected, the game itself made history by bringing the largest crowd to Autzen Stadium for the Big Ten Battle. As Bleacher Report reported, 15 NFL scouts were in attendance.
Will Howard is the talking point of Oregon vs Ohio State game
The week 7 game itself was a rollercoaster, filled with wild moments. Ohio State snagged an early lead thanks to a controversial call on a pass to Will Kacmarek. This was a different time for Oregon fans, who felt it should’ve been ruled an interception. The refs didn’t review it, and Howard capitalized with a touchdown run to kick off the scoring.
The first half was intense, but the Ducks had a one-point advantage. It was also marked by a dramatic ejection of Oregon’s Traeshon Holden for spitting on an Ohio State player.
Both teams managed to keep the pressure on, ending the third quarter with a six-point advantage for the Buckeyes.
In the end, a 27-yard touchdown run by Dillon Gabriel in the fourth quarter proved to be the game-winner. Gabriel finished with 341 passing yards and three touchdowns, outshining Howard’s effort.
The final dagger came when a 15-yard offensive pass interference penalty against Ohio State’s Jeremiah Smith went to Howard’s infamous clock-killing slide, sealing the Ducks’ win.
The missed opportunities, wild plays, and crucial mistakes have frustrated Ohio State fans, including Howard’s decision at the end of the game.
