Steve Sarkisian and the Texas Longhorns are going to begin a new journey as members of the SEC this upcoming season. Last season, they were successful in securing the Big 12 championship title and a playoff berth. However, Texas lost to Washington Huskies in the CFP semifinals, ending Sarkisian's dream of securing his first natty with the program.
As the preparation for their SEC debut continues, Texas women's basketball head coach Vic Schaefer has praised the work Steve Sarkisian has done so far with the program. He talked about how the Longhorns looked like an 'aggressive' team under Sarkisian's leadership.
"Sark's done an amazing job in three short years and his teams are just physical, they're tough, they're aggressive," Schaefer said. "And I think all of my teams- you know, I think any coach if you describe your team as tough, physical, aggressive team, that didn't say anything about your skill set but you'd like that as a coach.
"I think that's what you get when you get teams from Texas. We have a, you know, one of our sayings is, 'Texas fight, Texas tough.' And I think that's what you get when you play a team from the University of Texas." [h/t On3.com]
Steve Sarkisian spent two seasons as the offensive coordinator for Alabama under Nick Saban before being named the 31st head coach of the Longhorns in 2021. So far in his three-season stint with the program, he has secured an overall record of 25-14. Last season's Big 12 championship victory was Sarkisian's first with the program.
Quinn Ewers on Steve Sarkisian's contribution to the program
Texas QB Quinn Ewers was brought in from Ohio State in 2022 by Sarkisian. Over the years, he has developed himself into a reliable quarterback leading the charge on the field. During a recent appearance on "RGIII's" podcast, Ewers talked about the various contributions that Steve Sarkisian has made to the program.
Ewers heaped praise on Sarkisian's leadership abilities. He also went on to state that the coach had revived the culture of 'winning' in the program and that he has been influential in building a sense of dedication and discipline within the team. In his own words:
"I mean, I think that he has brought a winning culture back to this university. And I think that's the main thing. I can stop there and talk about that. I mean, the way that we practise and the way that we work out, I mean, I don't think there's another team in the country that takes more pride in how hard we practice." [Time stamp: 23:21]
As the Texas Longhorns prepare for their new journey in the SEC and the revised 12-team playoff format, it remains to be seen how far Steve Sarkisian can lead the team.
