The Jayhawks drew first blood, capping off an eye-popping nine-minute drive with a touchdown pass from Jalon Daniels to go up 7-0 with six minutes remaining in the first quarter. Kansas' opening drive featured 15 plays that racked up 71 yards. Kansas' star defensive back Cobee Bryant ended Houston's opening drive with an interception to give the Jayhawks' offense the ball.
The Jayhawks quickly capitalized with a 48-yard bomb to Quentin Skinner to increase their lead to 14-0 with just over two minutes left in the opening period. After forcing a punt on Houston's second offensive drive, Kansas capped off a six-play, 84-yard drive with a third-straight touchdown to extend their lead to 21-0 with under 10 minutes remaining in the first half.
After responding with a touchdown, Houston's defense allowed a fourth-straight touchdown to bring the score to 28-7 with just three minutes remaining in the first half. The Cougars reeled it back in on their next drive, scoring their second-straight touchdown to cut Kansas' lead to 28-14. On Houston’s opening drive of the fourth quarter, Smith threw his third interception of the game and the fourth for the Cougars’ offense. The Jayhawks couldn’t capitalize on the turnover, as Tabor Allen missed a 47-yard field goal in a scarce defensive stand for Houston this afternoon.
After a turnover on downs, Kansas punched in their sixth touchdown of the game as Devin Neal highlighted the drive with a 54-yard scamper and a five-yard touchdown run, extending the lead to 42-14 and sealing the win for the Jayhawks.
