College football fans can finally get their hands on EA Sports College Football 25 after the game was officially released worldwide on July 19. The highly anticipated game is the first licensed college football game that has been released in over a decade.
The landscape of college football has continued to evolve during that time, and the game has added elements to certain playbooks to reflect the changes that have taken place. That includes a deep RPO (run-pass option) system that is difficult to stop when mastered.
Here is a guide on how to effectively run RPO plays to add another element to your offense and dominate opponents on EA Sports College Football 25.
What is RPO in College Football 25?
RPO stands for run-pass option and is utilized by many college football programs in real life and in College Football 25. While many different variations of RPOs exist, usually they include an option to hand the ball to the running back, have the quarterback hold on to the ball or quickly hit a receiver with a pass downfield.
Players can maximize the effectiveness of these options by reading the defense and making their decision according to how the linebackers react to the play.
If the defense drops deep into coverage, put the ball into the hands of your running back and let him follow his blockers, or utilize a mobile quarterback and have them hold on to the ball.
If the defense sends a blitz, it is best to quickly find an open receiver and let your quarterback throw the ball. But if you hold the ball too long, there is a risk that your lineman will begin blocking past the line of scrimmage, causing a potential illegal man downfield.
Practicing RPO plays in College Football 25's open practice game mode will be the quickest and easiest way to perfect this mechanic in the new game.
How to do an RPO in College Football 25
Players can select which RPO play they would like to run on the play selection screen. Certain RPO plays allow for different options, so make sure to be aware if the selected play allows the quarterback to keep possession of the ball or not.
Once the play is selected, figuring out the best option to use within the play is determined by reading how the defense reacts.
Here are the different options players can use and how to execute them within the game.
Handoff
To hand the ball off to the running back, no action is required. The ball will automatically be handed off after the snap.
Quick pass
To perform a quick pass out from an RPO play, simply tap the button corresponding to which receiver you'd like to target.
QB keep
To have the quarterback hold on to the ball and run himself, hold the A button on Xbox or the X button on PlayStation after the snap. This will force the QB to pull the ball away from the running back coming in for the handoff and allow him to find the open running lane and take it himself.
Will you be trying out the new RPO system in the game? Let us know in the comments.
