CFB analyst Jason Whitlock has been one of the top critics of Deion Sanders since he became the coach of Colorado football. The Fox Radio analyst has hit out on the Pro Football Hall of Famer on several occasions, expressing his concerns at his approach and believing it won’t work out well.
Colorado currently holds a 6-2 record with 4-1 in conference play. With a bowl qualification in the bag, it’s looking like Sanders is getting it right at the Buffaloes. Whitlock, however, remains critical of his approach in Boulder.
“How you win matters,” Whitlock said on ‘Fearless with Jason Whitlock' (2:12). “And much of my criticism of Deion Sanders has been about his approach to building that football program. I didn't think it would work.”
“His approach is not good but it's working. His approach is not healthy but it's working. I think that speaks to the corrupt system that has been built in college athletics. And it disappoints me that we've built a corrupt system.”
Jason Whitlock condemns the current system of college football that has aided Deion Sanders
The college football landscape has witnessed significant changes in the last couple of years.
The current success of Deion Sanders at Colorado can be attributed to these radical changes, especially considering the way he’s used the transfer portal in his first year in Boulder. The coach has been able to make the new concepts within the realm work in his favor.
Despite agreeing to the significant improvement of Colorado, Jason Whitlock isn’t impressed with the system that has enabled that. The analyst condemned the newly built system that has aided Sanders’ success while speaking further on “Fearless with Jason Whitlock.”
“Their defense is improved, hats off to them,” Whitlock said (3:57).“[Their] offense is dangerous because there's speed on the outside, their receivers are talented and Shedeur Sanders can get them the ball and the offensive line has improved. Colorado has improved.”
“The system has been changed in a way that someone like Deion could come in, work the transfer portal, work name, image and likeness, and buy up enough talent to be competitive. That's all to him. He's working a system that I don't respect. I'm not going to apologize for that. And I'm not going to back away from being critical of Deion’s approach.”
With four games to go in the regular season, Colorado has an outside chance to make the Big 12 championship game. Sanders has pretty much turned things around at the once-struggling football program but Whitlock remains critical.
