Steve Sarkisian and the No. 1 Texas Longhorns lost their first game this season against the No. 5 Georgia Bulldogs. The Longhorns joined the SEC conference this season and had so far been incredible in their debut campaign. Unfortunately, their six-game winning streak came to an end at the hands of Kirby Smart's team.
The Longhorns struggled to utilize their offensive firepower in Week 8. The Bulldogs' defense was almost impenetrable in Austin. Despite this, Quinn Ewers managed to find two touchdowns in the third quarter, but it was not enough for them to make a comeback after trailing by 23 points at the end of the first half.
In the postgame press conference, Steve Sarkisian opened up about how he wants to have a potential rematch with Georgia. There is a possibility of both teams going head-to-head once again in the conference title game and a potential national championship showdown.
Sarkisian took over as the head coach of the Longhorns in 2021. Last season, he led them to a Big 12 title and the College Football Playoff. However, they lost their CFP semifinal game against Washington, bringing an end to their natty hopes.
So far in their debut SEC campaign this season, Texas has been formidable on the field. Last week, they dominated the Red River rivalry game against the Oklahoma Sooners. The Longhorns take on the Vanderbilt Commodores in Week 9 as they look to regain their winning momentum.
Steve Sarkisian clears the air surrounding who will be Texas' starting QB
During the first half against Georgia, Sarkisian decided to replace Quinn Ewers with Arch Manning, which led to a lot of questions brewing. He then brought Ewers back in the second half and the QB went on to score two consolation touchdown passes for his team.
In the postgame press conference, Sarkisian cleared the air surrounding the quarterback battle between Manning and Quinn Ewers.
"Quinn's our starting quarterback," Sarkisian said via On3.com. "I appreciate the fact that we are fortunate enough to have a backup like Arch that could come into the game and provide a spark in some sense.
"At the end of the day, Quinn's our starter. I can think, like I said, we've got to do a better job around him. I think he would tell you he can play better, but we've got to coach better. Everybody's got to be better for our offense to perform better," he added.
The Longhorns still have a strong chance to win the SEC conference title in their debut season. But the ultimate goal for Steve Sarkisian and Co. remains the same: become natty champions.
