7x retired Super Bowl champ Tom Brady did not have the same success during his collegiate career. Coming out of Junipero Serra, the former NFL QB spent five seasons with the Michigan Wolverines. However, Brady had to face a lot of challenges before becoming the program's starting QB.
Last year in September, Tom Brady had an interview with Patrick Bet-David. During the interview, he opened up about the adversities he had to face during his collegiate career to be recognized as a starter.
Brady talked about how he was clueless about the difficulties of becoming a recognized QB in college. Brady also opened up about the confidence that he had in himself when it came to improving his skills and talents.
"If there was a blessing in my life that I would say, you know some of the things I'm blessed with like hard work, discipline, I was also blessed with being very naive," Brady said. "I had no idea how hard it was. But I believe because I was like, 'I don't know like I'm gonna get better and I'm gonna be better,'" (8:20 onwards)
When Tom Brady initially enrolled with the Michigan Wolverines, he was listed seventh on the QB depth chart. After spending three seasons with limited playing time, Brady became the starting QB of the Wolverines during his final two seasons (1998 and 1999 season).
During his five-season stint with the Wolverines, Brady recorded a total of 4,773 passing yards and 30 TD passes while throwing 17 interceptions. He was then drafted as the 199th overall pick by the New England Patriots during the 2000 NFL draft.
Tom Brady talks about his struggles during his Michigan college career
In the interview with Patrick Bet-David, the 7x Super Bowl champ also opened up about how hard he tried to make an impression during his Michigan career. Brady also talked about how it was his first time properly dealing with football gear and how other players intimidated him on the gridiron.
"I remember showing up my first day of freshman year. I didn't care how much hair I had under my arms and all that, and the other kids came in shaving and I'm like, 'What the hell is this?' I didn't know how to put the pads on in my pants when I tried out for freshman football. I'd never play until that point, except in the streets," Brady said. (1:30 onwards)
"These kids came out there, they had helmets and shoulder pads that they had worn for four years. I thought I was gonna get killed out there."
During his two-season stint as the QB1 of the Wolverines, Tom Brady led them to a 10-3 and 10-2 overall campaigns. This included two bowl wins: the 1999 Florida Citrus Bowl against Arkansas and the 2000 Orange Bowl against Alabama.
