Shedeur Sanders started his career at Colorado on a brilliant note. The quarterback transferred to the program in 2023 after playing his freshman and sophomore seasons at Jackson State. He moved to Boulder after his father, Deion Sanders, took the Buffaloes' head coaching job.
Shedeur was impressive in the first three games, with the team starting 3-0. This began to get the quarterback a lot of attention within the college football landscape.
His performance in Week 3 against Colorado State that season earned him a lot of recognition. The signal-caller was named Manning Award Star of the Week, Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award Player of the Week and Davey O’Brien Award Great 8. This resulted in his mother, Pilar Sanders, hyping him up on social media in Sept. 2023.
"I definitely got some hims!!!!" Pilar Sanders wrote
How far Shedeur Sanders has come since then
While things went south for Colorado following the overtime win over Colorado State in 2023, Shedeur Sanders’ performance didn't decline. The Buffaloes went on to win only one of their last nine games but Sanders was able to establish himself as a top quarterback in the landscape.
In the 2023 college football season, Sanders had to play behind a weak offensive line, suffering the second-most sacks in the Football Bowl Subdivision. Nonetheless, playing in that condition, he threw for 3,230 yards and 27 touchdowns.
Sanders entered the 2024 season as arguably the best quarterback in college football. He was the highest-rated quarterback (93 overall) in the EA Sports College Football 25 video game, slightly ahead of Georgia’s Carson Beck. His performance so far this season is already placing him as a top pick in the upcoming 2025 NFL Draft.
Shedeur Sanders’ increased draft stock
Shedeur Sanders has seen his draft stock increase significantly since transferring to Colorado. He's widely considered a first-round pick in 2025, with a host of franchises reportedly evaluating him. ESPN analyst Mel Kiper believes he will be the first quarterback off the board.
“Shedeur Sanders has had to survive," Kiper said while rating quarterbacks for the 2025 draft. "I don't know any other quarterback that could, and still be out there ... to keep getting back up and competing. I'm ready to put Shedeur at QB1, I really am, just because of that reason.”
If Shedeur gets taken in the first round of the draft, he will be following in his father's footsteps. Deion Sanders was picked as the fifth overall pick in the 1989 NFL Draft. Prime Time went on to become a Pro Football Hall of Famer.
