Steve Sarkisian made it clear how he feels about Texas' starting quarterback Quinn Ewers. After a tough first half where Texas fell behind 20-0, Ewers was benched. During his time on the field, the Longhorns managed just 15 yards in five drives, and Ewers faced two turnovers — a fumble and an interception.
Arch Manning, the nephew of NFL legends Peyton and Eli, stepped in briefly during the second quarter of Texas’ 30-15 loss to No. 5 Georgia.
It was Ewers' second game back after dealing with an abdomen strain from the Week 3 game with UTSA. He returned at the start of the third quarter, with Texas down 23-0. Manning started warming up after Ewers was sacked with 7:26 left in the second quarter.
According to 'Inside Texas' tweet post, reflecting on the game, Sarkisian said:
"I felt Quinn was a little uneasy,” he said. “I felt like giving him a chance to kind of step back and regroup.
“We told Quinn we're going to go with Arch here and give you a chance to get into the locker room. Let's regroup and then come back out in the second half, and so that's what we did.”
Sarkisian also emphasized that the team is “lucky” to have a backup like Arch who can come in and make a difference:
“I appreciate the fact we're fortunate enough to have a backup like Arch that could come into the game and provide a spark in some sense,” he said.
However, according to the coach, Quinn is the starting quarterback. The Longhorns need to improve as a team so that their offense can perform at its best.
Steve Sarkisian opened up about his decision to bench Quinn Ewers
Steve Sarkisian opened up about his decision to temporarily bench Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers in favor of Arch Manning. Ewers had a tough start, completing just 6-of-12 passes for 17 yards, along with an interception and a fumble following a cornerback blitz.
“I was trying to settle down Quinn a little bit, give us a little bit of a spark,” Sarkisian told ABC at halftime.
With the Longhorns trailing 20-0 after another three-and-out that led to a Georgia field goal, Manning stepped onto the field with 4:43 left in the second quarter. He faced immediate pressure and had to throw the ball away on his first play as Georgia dominated Texas' experienced offensive line.
However, Manning showcased his athleticism during his second drive, scrambling for a 21-yard gain. Unfortunately, he missed an open receiver on his first drive and later fumbled after taking another sack, which resulted in another Georgia field goal.
By the end of the half, Manning had completed 3-of-6 passes for 19 yards. Ewers returned to the field to kick off the second half at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium, looking to regroup after a rough outing.
