Colorado Buffaloes two-way star Travis Hunter has had a stellar season that could end in him winning the Heisman Trophy. It will be the last season of his college football career as he is set to enter the 2025 NFL draft.
While Hunter has had an incredibly successful college career, he has not taken a standard path. As a five-star recruit in high school, he initially committed to Florida State a day after visiting the school for the first time. However, a year later, he switched his commitment to the Jackson State Tigers, who were coached by Deion Sanders at the time.
Travis Hunter appeared on "The Pivot Podcast" on Tuesday and spoke about this decision. He talked about how he told his then-girlfriend and now-fiancee Leanna Lenee about the decision before his family (starts at 8:36).
"I'd say Coach Prime, he wanted me and he let me know. You know when we had that conversation about whether I was going to go or stay with Florida State he let me know he wanted me. He said, 'it's going to be a big impact, but you're a humble kid we know you can take on whatever comes your way, so it's your choice to make.'
"I finalized and made that decision with my girl. She was still there, she still is here. People don't know I had that conversation with her first before I went to my family and had that conversation.
"Once I had that conversation with them, let them know, I know it's a big sacrifice but one day my brothers and sisters might not go D1 and I still got to shine a light somewhere else, and that was my main focus and that's what I did."
Travis Hunter has followed Deion Sanders throughout his college career
Throughout his college career, Travis Hunter has expressed the impact of having Deion Sanders as his coach. He valued being coached by him so much that when Coach Prime took a job with the Colorado Buffaloes in 2023, Hunter transferred to the University of Colorado to continue his career under him.
The move turned out to be great for both parties as the pair have helped turn the Colorado Buffaloes from one of the most overlooked programs in the country to a prosperous one. Their final college season together will end in the Valero Alamo Bowl on Dec. 28 when they face the No. 17-ranked BYU Cougars.
