Shilo Sanders, the Colorado Buffaloes safety and son of NFL legend Deion Sanders, has spoken out as wildfires wreak havoc across Los Angeles. The infernos, driven by Santa Ana winds, have ravaged the Pacific Palisades, destroying multimillion-dollar homes, Temescal Canyon landmarks and parts of the Palisades Charter High School.
The flames cast smoke into the sky, leaving the city in a dark haze. Taking to Instagram, Shilo expressed his support for those affected and raised critical concerns.
“One of my closest friends just lost everything,” he wrote.
“I'm always gon ask questions because the safety of my friends and their families are at risk. I think we all should continue to ask questions to find ways of prevention and ways to help,” Shilo stated.
Speaking on a podcast, Shilo admitted his confusion about wildfires.
"I just don't understand wildfires. How can you not put out a fire. With all the firefighters we have, all the water that's in California, how can you just not put out a fire.” He also joked, saying: “There’s someone running around California lighting fires. We just don’t know who it is.”
Red flag warnings persist in L.A. as firefighters try to get a handle on the situation.
Shilo Sanders latest ruling in bankruptcy case
Shilo secured a considerable win last month in his bankruptcy case, keeping his fight to discharge $11 million in debt alive. A federal ruling stated that a trial would be necessary to determine if Sanders’ actions in a 2015 incident were “willful and malicious.”
The case stems from an alleged assault on school security guard John Darjean when Shilo Sanders was 15. Darjean claims the altercation left him with severe injuries, resulting in an $11.89 million default judgment against Shilo in 2022. However, Shilo and his father have disputed the allegations, and the 24-year-old filing for bankruptcy in 2023 to erase the debt.
The case now hinges on the need to examine Shilo’s intent during the 2015 incident, leaving the door open for self-defense arguments. “The state court judgment makes no mention of Sanders’ state of mind or justification for his actions,” the judge stated.
