Former Flordia coach Dan Mullen offered his view on the race for the Atlantic Coast Conference championship for the 2024 college football season. With the fatal fall of offseason’s favorite Florida State, the conference title is now considered a two-horse race between Miami and Clemson.
Miami has been impressive this season, winning all seven games. Clemson, on the other hand, has recorded only one loss overall, which came in the season opener against Georgia. The two are in the frame for the league crown, being the only undefeated teams in conference play.
Despite the Hurricanes looking in a much better position right now, Dan Mullen sees the Tigers going on to claim the title. He offered his view during the halftime of the game between Louisville and Boston College on Friday.
“I’m going Clemson,” Mullen said. “Clemson, after Week 1 of the season, we watched them go in, we’re expecting a big game against Georgia. They have a good first half, get absolutely decimated in the second half of that game.
“Scratch your head, maybe they have it going on. Since that day, Cade Klubnik, the offense, explosive. They’re putting up points, they’re putting up yards, their defense has come to play. They have dominated everyone they have played since that early loss.”
Dan Mullen predicts Miami and Clemson to contest for ACC title game
Dan Mullen disclosed his prediction for the 2024 ACC championship game on Friday night. The former Florida coach sees Miami and Clemson squaring up at the Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina, in December.
“And I think Clemson rolls through the season to get to that title game against Miami, and Clemson gets the win,” Mullen said. “Miami, the Cinderella story, finally, it’s gonna strike midnight and all these close wins are gonna come to an end.”
Should the Tigers go on to claim the ACC championship, it will be their eighth conference title in 10 years, showcasing massive dominance in the league. It will also serve as a bounceback for Dabo Swinney's team following the disappointment of last season.
It's worth noting that a conference championship win guarantees a team an automatic place in the expanded College Football Playoff. The league champion will not only secure a place in the postseason tournament, but it will also get a bye from the first round of play.
A return to the playoffs could help Clemson ignite the hope of winning the national title again. It remains to be seen if the Tigers get to claim the conference crown, as Dan Mullen predicted.
