Following a 28-14 crushing defeat for Quinn Ewers' Texas Longhorns in the Cotton Bowl Classic against the Ohio State Buckeyes, college football analyst Colin Cowherd made an eye-catching remark about the quarterback, whose future remains uncertain.
With Arch Manning waiting in the wings to become a full-time starter next season, Ewers is faced with the decision to either enter the 2025 NFL draft or return to college football for another year. If he does the latter, the question is where he's heading next because clearly, the Longhorns won't entertain him as starting quarterback.
Following the College Football Playoff semifinal game where Ewers completed 23 of 39 passes for 283 yards, two touchdowns and one interception, Cowherd took to X, to share his feelings.
"Guess I’m gong to have to start liking Quinn Ewers," the analyst wrote.
The post-game comments come on the heels of the quarterback facing unwarranted criticism from all corners. This includes Cowherd, who called the quarterback "a liability" a week ago.
Colin Cowherd doesn't like Quinn Ewers and he doesn't hide it
Friday's sarcastic remarks weren't the first time Quinn Ewers got the bad from a renowned analyst. Appearing on "The Colin Cowherd" podcast last week, Cowherd criticized Ewers' approach to the passing game, saying it relied too heavily on athleticism rather than strategy.
"Too many times in the passing game, it’s a jump ball," he said. "Like, he doesn’t have defined reads. Too often, it’s just like, 'Let’s just get better players and throw a ball up the sideline.'"
Cowherd exonerated coach Steve Sarkisian from blame, despite acknowledging he has been critical of him in the past.
"I’m going to defend him here," Cowherd added. "I think you can look at Ewers' box score—it doesn’t look that bad. He’s 20-30, 322 yards. To me, he’s a liability."
The overarching issue, Cowherd argued, is that Texas has all the tools for a national championship run, except at quarterback. Cowherd didn’t mince words about the quarterback’s future either. He speculated that the Texas fanbase is ready to move on.
"I would imagine the Texas Reddit community and the football community, he’s a pretty polarizing guy. And everyone’s like, 'We’re going to Arch Manning next year. No ifs, ands, or buts about it,'" Cowherd added.
Whether fans agree or not, one thing is clear: Colin Cowherd has made up his mind about Quinn Ewers — and it’s not a glowing endorsement.
