The hiring of Bill Belichick as the new coach of the North Carolina Tar Heels has raised eyebrows. The Tar Heels will be his first venture into college football after spending 24 years as the head coach of the New England Patriots.
However, his move into college football may be his reaction to the current state of the NFL. Analyst Jason Whitlock believes this, saying that if Belichick had taken another job in the NFL, he may be thinking the following:
"I'm gonna have to surrender control to these layers of mangement in the National Football League that are being established that I don't want to subject myself to." (5:30)
According to ESPN senior writer Seth Wickersham, Bill Belichick was interested in numerous NFL coaching roles. The most likely destination for him would have been the Chicago Bears. However, the Bears did not consider him in the end.
While not having a coaching job would have been a setback for the man who turned the Patriots into a dynasty, this may have its positives. Bill has a distinct coaching style that controls many aspects of the teams.
What Whitlock meant was that this kind of coaching and team structure is not what many NFL teams have in 2024. There are many layers and management to please, all of whom would want to have some control over the decisions made by the coach.
According to Whitlock, this lack of control over the team is a potential reason why Belichick is not coaching in the NFL today. This claim is backed up by a quote from the Wickersham article, which reads:
"It was because, in the words of a confidant, Belichick is "disgusted" in what he believes the NFL had become."
Bill Belichick is excited to become the North Carolina coach
On Thursday, Bill Belichick held his introductory press conference as North Carolina coach. He opened it by saying the following:
"I am excited for the opportunity at UNC-Chapel Hill.I grew up around college football with my dad and treasured those times. I have always wanted to coach in college, and now I look forward to building the football programme in Chapel Hill."
Belichick said that, while he has never coached in college before, it is not a completely alien environment for him due to his father's experience in college football.
What remains to be seen is how he intends to run this program.
