Notre Dame cornerback Benjamin Morrison will miss the rest of the season due to a hip injury. The injury occurred during his team's 49-7 win against Stanford and will require surgery.
In response to the news, Morrison posted an emotional message on social media, which read:
"I won’t lie—I’m heartbroken that my season was cut short due to injury. There’s nothing like being on the field with my brothers, and nothing will fill that void. But I’m trusting God and His plans for my life. Everything He’s placed in my heart, I believe, He will bring to pass. My faith is going to be strengthened through this so I’ll keep holding on to His promises. Injuries might be part of the game but they’re never part of the plan. I know God is faithful, and even though I may change, He never will. “God has brought me laughter, and everyone who hears about this will laugh with me.” – Genesis 21:6. I believe that I am going to look back, and this situation will bring me joy."
Before his injury, Morrison recorded 20 tackles this season and had become a key player in his position.
The injury to Morrison is likely to affect any draft stock he had.
It was widely predicted that Morrison would declare for the 2025 draft and be selected as a first-round pick.
CBS Sports projected him to be the 17th overall pick in their most recent mock draft.
The injury could cause this to fall to the second or third round. However, Morrison does not have to declare this season as he has one more year of eligibility.
An injury-free 2025 season at Notre Dame would benefit both parties. Morrison would be able to regain or even improve any lost draft stock, while the Fighting Irish would be able to keep one of their stronger players in this position for another year.
How has Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman reacted to Benjamin Morrison's injury?
In his Monday press conference, Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman revealed that Benjamin Morrison is ruled out of the season. However, he also had some words of strength to impart:
"Obviously, it's a blow to our team to lose a captain. Great football player. And you feel terrible for the kid 'cause he gives football, he gives preparation, everything he has. It's just tough, but he's a tough kid."
The injury to Morrison is another addition to the injury crisis affecting the Fighting Irish program.
Morrison joins sack leader Boubacar Traore and fellow cornerback Jaden Mickey as key defensive players who are not on the field.
Currently, Notre Dame only has three scholarship-receiving players available at the Cornerback position, two of whom are freshmen.
However, one of these players is experienced Christian Gray, who will have to step up even more than he is already to help protect Notre Dame from their opponents' passing game.
