Urban Meyer is a former college football coach who won three national championships with the Florida Gators and Ohio State Buckeyes. He had the opportunity to see the quality of the Southeastern Conference and Big Ten up close. However, the SEC was largely viewed as the far stronger conference.

On Saturday, Meyer appeared on "The Triple Option" and discussed one of the biggest talking points this season: the rise of the Big Ten and the grim future of the SEC.

"I missed on some things, I was part of the SEC bandwagon as well," he said. (7:00) "I coached in that conference and top to bottom it wasn't even close when I got to the Big Ten in 2012. The speed on the field didn't even look the same. In 2012, the Big Ten was not a good conference relative to the SEC, not even close.
I think what's happened is there's been some additions, obviously Oregon, you have Washington, UCLA, and USC. But also people have really committed in the Big Ten. the upper echelon big conference schools have really jumped on as far as recruiting, you saw the Wolverines last year, the Buckeyes this year. There's a good argument now and I know people got at the ESPN commentators pretty bad because they were complaing that South Carolina and Ole Miss should've been in over those other teams. Not so fast."

Urban Meyer agrees that the Big Ten has emerged as a contender for the SEC this season

Urban Meyer made it clear on "The Triple Option" podcast that the Big Ten has caught up to the SEC this season. It is not hard to see why as the Big Ten has had much more success this season. Entering the College Football Playoff semifinals, Big Ten teams Ohio State and Penn State and SEC team Texas are left.

Furthermore, Oregon, Ohio State, Indiana and Penn State qualified for the playoff in the Big Ten. Conversely, only Texas, Georgia and Tennessee qualified in the SEC. So, the Big Ten was the most dominant conference for at least this season. One season is not a trend, but if this continues, fans will need to reconsider what the best conference is.
