Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin has become known for his use of social media, especially his account on X. He is known to poke fun at other coaches on the platform, something that college football fans enjoy seeing.
This style of social media content has been pushed by him for some time, and Kiffin was once asked about it. This occurred in 2016, when Kiffin said of his social media:
"Yeah, I don't really run my Twitter or social media. Coach Saban runs it."
This is a jab at the then-coach of the Alabama Crimson Tide, Nick Saban. At the time, he was the only coach in the SEC without an X account, or any account on social media that was known to the public.
Skip forward eight years later, and the same is still true. Saban still does not have any presence on social media, and Lane Kiffin is still using his to troll others.
His account has become so well known that even his dog, Juice, has a social media account and following.
However, after this joke, Kiffin explained his reasoning on why he is frequently active on social media.
"Really, it's just where we're at with the generation of kids we're recruiting. To interact with them and my own children, it's just kinda where we're at. That's really how a lot of recruits communicate. Until they changed where we could text kids a couple of months ago, that was really our easiest way to be able to interact with them."
Lane Kiffin on the impact social media has on recruitment
Before the 2023 season, Lane Kiffin again spoke about his social media strategy and persona, and how that has an impact on recruitment. He told "Marty & McGee" at the time:
“I think that there is work Lane Kiffin, as you say, then there’s Twitter. OK, because I took it. It was not a plan. It’s worked well actually because I go into houses in recruiting and stuff, and that’s really why I kept doing so much of it.
“Because parents go, ‘I feel like we know you,' you come in and if you don’t have that, they’re just like, ‘Oh, we’ve seen you on TV before coaching a game’ versus ‘Hey man, how about that tweet, that is so funny. You’re like my No. 1 follow'."
Lane Kiffin has been able to use his social media account and subsequently follow it to help benefit the Ole Miss program. This has given him access to numerous recruits that have gone on to make a difference for the Rebels.
