College football analyst Danny Kanell has doubts about Alabama’s playoff chances and said the Crimson Tide’s record isn’t impressive compared to other contenders. With two top-25 wins, including a major upset over No. 2 Georgia, and two losses, including a close game at No. 7 Tennessee, Alabama’s season has been a mixed bag.
Kanell explained his skepticism on CBS Sports:
“I don’t think Bama has looked like a Playoff team, I don’t think their resume is deserving of a Playoff Spot.”
After a bye week, Alabama is set for what feels like a must-win matchup against LSU, a team also fighting for survival in the playoff race.
"If they do that (against LSU), I'll give them a sliver of a chance (to make the playoff),” Kanell said. “But I don't think their resume stacks up as good as anyone thinks.” "It's that one win against Georgia that they're hanging their hat on."
Kanell didn’t hold back on Alabama’s recent 34-0 victory over Missouri, calling the Tigers “one of the most overrated teams” and suggesting the win didn’t boost Alabama’s resume. He argued that for Alabama to even have a chance, quarterback Jalen Milroe needs to settle back into the offense, and their run game must find its groove.
It’s that one win against Georgia they’re banking on, per Kanell, leaving Alabama with only a ‘sliver of a chance’ at the playoffs.
Alabama Crimson Tide’s path isn’t easy
Before last Saturday’s game against Missouri, Alabama’s shot at making the College Football Playoff was a shaky 43%. A loss would have spelled elimination. But now, after a win, the Tide’s chances have climbed to 52.3% as ESPN's Week 10 FPI rankings show a 9% bump in their odds.
Alabama’s path isn’t easy, though. They still have tough road games at LSU and Oklahoma, plus a showdown with Auburn in their regular season finale.
So far, Alabama’s run game ranks sixth in the SEC, putting up 177.6 yards per game, and they lead the conference with 28 rushing touchdowns — the third-highest tally in the nation, just behind Army and Indiana.
