Cam Skattebo played a crucial role In Arizona State's Big 12 championship success on Saturday. The Sun Devils defeated Iowa State 45-19 at the AT&T Stadium in Dallas to claim the program's first outright title since 1996. The running back made a bold claim during the game with a Heisman pose.
Speaking in his postgame press conference, Cam Skattebo claimed himself as the premier running back in the nation. The former Sacramento State player opined that he should be in the Heisman Trophy race on the back of an outstanding season.
"I've been disrespected my whole life," Skattebo said in his postgame press conference. "I've always been the underdog and nobody respects the fact that I'm the best running back in the country and I'm going to stand on that.
“If people want to disrespect that, I'm going to keep going and I'm going to keep proving people wrong ... Winning the Heisman or losing the Heisman, I should still be in that situation.”
Skattebo rushed for 170 yards and two touchdowns in 16 carries against the Cyclones on Saturday. He also recorded a receiving touchdown in the third quarter, connecting with quarterback Sam Leavitt from 33 yards.
Kenny Dillingham backs Cam Skattebo on his Heisman claim
Arizona State coach Kenny Dillingham believes Cam Skattebo has done enough this season to be in the Heisman race. Dillingham, however, respects Travis Hunter and Ashton Jeanty's lead in the race.
"Turn on the tape. I mean he's really good. He's good enough to be there," Dillingham said after the Big 12 championship success. "I don't know what else you can do to put your name in the race.
“Obviously, there's two other guys that are really, really high on that list and I don't know if he should ever surpass those guys, but should he be on that list? Should he have the opportunity to go there? Yes."
Cam Skattebo has rushed for 1,568 yards and 19 touchdowns this season. He has the opportunity to add to that number in the College Football Playoff having secured automatic qualification with the conference championship victory.
His numbers are, however, way below that of Ashton Jeanty, the other running back in the race for the Heisman Trophy. Jeanty has had an outstanding season so far, rushing for 2,497 yards and 29 touchdowns to his name this season.
