This time last year, college football analyst Kirk Herbstreit was on the receiving end of abuse after the College Football Playoff bracket came out.
Before the unveiling of this year's expanded bracket, Herbstreit appeared to ESPN's "Selection Sunday" show to reflect on what happened last year and his one wish for this year.
"After last year, I have learned, I have no opinions about anything. I think everybody gets a trophy. Everybody gets in. I want no death threats, I want no punishment for 8 months from #FSUTwitter. So I have no opinion on anything. I love everybody."
This year, Herbstreit has decided to do the complete opposite of what he did last year and not have an opinion on anything.
This move stems from the decision to remove the Florida State Seminoles from a spot in the then four-team CFP. While Herbstreit was not directly involved in this decision, he was an active voice for the exclusion of the Seminoles and the subsequent inclusion of then-SEC champions, the Alabama Crimson Tide.
To make matters worse for Herbstreit, the Seminoles side he thought would not make it were undefeated and had just won the ACC Championship game. In contrast, Alabama had one loss on the season to the Texas Longhorns, who did make the playoff. Star quarterback Jordan Travis was injured and would miss the playoff had the Seminoles got in, which proved to be a factor in the committee excluding FSU.
For the last year, Herbstreit has become a strawman for Seminoles fans, who blame him for what happened to their team.
This year, while the playoff was expanded, another controversial decision featuring the Alabama Crimson Tide could have been made. Alabama was competing with SMU for an at-large spot after the Mustangs lost to Clemson in the ACC Championship game.
It appears the CFP selection committee may have learnt its lesson from last year. The Crimson Tide missed out of the playoff in favor of the Mustangs, who many fans wanted to be in.
