Bill Belichick was hired as the new coach of North Carolina on Thursday. The coach takes his first job in the college football landscape after almost five decades in the NFL, highlighted by his 24-year tenure with the New England Patriots.
There’s reportedly a clause in the deal with the Tar Heels which includes a stipulation naming Belichick's son, Steve, as a coach-in-waiting. During an episode of "Fearless with Jason Whitlock," sports commentator Steve Kim discussed about it.
“The other thing we did not bring up Jason – his son, I guess there’s a deal in place where he is the coach-in-waiting,” Kim said (timestamp 7:05). “Yay, Nepotism! If it's good for LeBron, it's good for Belichick.
“That to me is the most fascinating aspect of this deal and the riskiest portion of it if you're UNC. Yes, you're getting Bill Belichick, but you're at the risk at this age of him, saying halfway through the year; ‘l actually don't want to coach. This college game, I don't even like it anymore.”’
Steve Belichick is Washington's defensive coordinator, a job he took earlier this year. However, there are speculations he could be joining his father as an assistant in Chapel Hill, much like he did during his time with the New England Patriots.
Analyst suggest why North Carolina had that deal with Bill Belichick
Having Steve Belichick as coach-in-waiting could potentially be risky for North Carolina. However, Jason Whitlock believes the school has an end goal to include that in the deal to lure Bill Belichick.
“Let's introduce what North Carolina’s real agenda here might be,” Whitlock said on his podcast (timestamp 8:13). “I think it's larger than ‘Hey! We'd like to win the ACC. Hey! We'd like to be competitive and win, go to bowl games consistently …’ I think it's larger than that.
“I think Belichick makes North Carolina attractive to the Big Ten. That's why this deal is being cut in reality … If Belichick steps away after two years, and they have to put in two or three years of Steve Belichick and his incompetence, but they are in the Big Ten. I think they'll live with that.”
North Carolina reportedly wants to leave the ACC despite its watertight Grant of Rights agreement. Though, not currently in active pursuit of an exit like the duo of Clemson and Florida State, there are clear indications of the school’s ambition.
