The Arizona State Sun Devils lost their Peach Bowl matchup to the Texas Longhorns 39-31 in two overtimes in a College Football Playoff quarterfinal game on Wednesday. But first-team All-American running back Cam Skattebo, who finished fifth in the Heisman Trophy race, did all he could.
Skattebo ran for 143 yards and two touchdowns, had eight catches for 99 yards, threw a 42-yard touchdown pass and ran for a two-point conversion. His scores came in the fourth quarter and in overtime as Arizona State (11-3) nearly stunned Texas (13-2) after trailing 17-3 at halftime.
Ahead of the Peach Bowl, Skattebo drew high praise from ESPN analyst Pat McAfee during the "College GameDay" broadcast.
"I love the way (Cam Skattebo) plays football, and I like the way the Arizona State team has set him up for success," McAfee said. "It all runs through Cam Skattebo. He's a Ram truck at 5-foot-9 and the way he's built. He's impossible to tackle, and he knows that."
Skattebo was coming off a legendary performance in Arizona State's 45-19 victory over Iowa State in the Big 12 Championship Game. He rushed for 170 yards and two touchdowns on 16 carries and added two receptions for 38 yards and a third touchdown.
Cam Skattebo shines in Peach Bowl
Skattebo and the Sun Devils suffered a 39-31 double-overtime loss versus Texas in the Peach Bowl, giving the Longhorns a run despite entering the matchup as a 13.5-point underdog.
The Sun Devils ignited a run in the second half after facing a 24-8 deficit, outscoring the Longhorns 21-6 in the final two quarters to force overtime. Arizona State and Texas then exchanged blows to force double overtime. Texas scored on the opening play of the second overtime before forcing a game-sealing interception to advance to the Cotton Bowl.
Skattebo finished his historic season with one of the most legendary campaigns in program history. He notched 293 carries for 1,711 yards and 21 touchdowns. As a receiver, he added 45 catches for 605 yards and three touchdowns.
