Why did Julian Sayin transfer to Ohio State?

Julian Sayin’s college football career kicked off this season at Ohio State. The quarterback had earlier anticipated to play at Alabama this fall, but the plan unexpectedly changed after Nick Saban had announced his retirement. He explained why he opted for the transfer portal.

“I came to play for Coach Saban," Sayin said in August. "We had a great relationship through the recruiting process. Loved him. Loved Coach Saban and really wanted to go play for him.
"The new staff that came in, we didn't have a relationship prior to when I got there, so I just felt like it was the best decision for me to come out here."

Despite the amount of talent and experience in Ohio State's quarterback room, Julian Sayin has made an appearance this season. He threw for 61 yards and one touchdown in the season opener against Western Michigan.

Julian Sayin was stunned by Nick Saban’s retirement

Just like everyone else, Julian Sayin didn't anticipate the retirement of Nick Saban. He was preparing to start his college football career under the legendary coach and had enrolled early at Alabama before Saban's decision emerged in January.

"I would say we were caught by surprise," said Sayin. "Coming back from the game, there was a little bit high spirits because of the team returning, and then we were kind of caught by surprise.
"There was definitely a lot of emotions, but I had my family to lean on. They helped me through it, and I was able to make the right decision and end up here, and I'm loving it."

Sayin was one of the highest-rated prospects in the class of 2024. He was ranked the No. 12 prospect and No. 2 quarterback on Sportskeeda’s composite ranking. That places a lot of expectations on him at Ohio State.
