With the regular season drawing closer to an end, Travis Hunter’s Heisman Trophy campaign is intensifying. The cornerback has been largely impressive for No. 23 Colorado (8-3, 5-2 Big 12) this season, elevating him as a candidate for the most coveted award in college football.
Coach Prime’s son Deion Sanders Jr. has stepped up Hunter's Heisman Trophy campaign in a brand new way. In a recent Instagram story posted by his father, Deion Jr. was seen posing with the Colorado coach while wearing a sweatshirt that had a picture of Hunter.
Travis Hunter made a Heisman pose on Deion Jr.'s sweatshirt with the inscription “Double Play.” This is seen as a reference to the standout star playing two-way. Hunter plays on both sides of the ball for the Buffaloes and has impressed significantly.
National writer makes a case for Travis Hunter in the Heisman Trophy race
Rivals' National Recruiting Director Adam Gorney has declared the Colorado two-way sensation a top-notch talent at both wide receiver and cornerback in college football.
Gorney's praise did not stop there as he asserted that Hunter's extraordinary performance and versatility made him the clear-cut choice for the Heisman Trophy in a tight race between him and Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty.
“So an argument could be made that not only is Hunter the best defensive back in college football, that he’s also the best wide receiver," Gorney wrote.
“A two-way star who has revitalized a moribund Colorado program into a contender and arguably the best player in college football – at two positions. Go ahead and hand him the Heisman now.”
Deion Sanders furious after Travis Hunter was left out of the Thorpe Award
Deion Sanders has strongly criticized the decision to exclude Travis Hunter as a finalist for the Jim Thorpe Award on Tuesday. The coach argued that it undermined the integrity and credibility of the prestigious honor meant to recognize the nation’s top defensive back.
“How is Travis Hunter snubbed by the Thorpe Award?” Sanders said. “You can have my award. You can have it back. Matter of fact, I’m going to give him mine. I ain’t using it. It’s just sitting up there collecting dust.”
“Travis can have my Thorpe Award, because if this ain’t the most idiotic thing in college football, that he’s not a finalist for the Jim Thorpe Award and he is, I would say arguably, but I don’t think it’s really an argument about this young man being the best defensive back in college football.”
Hunter has been named a finalist for multiple prestigious college football awards, showcasing his exceptional versatility and impact on the game. These include the Maxwell Award, Biletnikoff Award, Bednarik Award, Hornung Award, and Walter Camp Award.
