The second-ranked Texas Longhorns faced the Texas A&M Aggies on Saturday in what was an important game in the race for a spot in the SEC championship game.
The Longhorns (11-1) won 17-7, earning a trip to Atlanta to face the fifth-ranked Georgia Bulldogs (10-2) on Saturday. However, that was not the only thing that they won, as a picture featuring Longhorns quarterbacks Quinn Ewers and Arch Manning shows.
This was a rivarly game, and like many of these kinds of games in college football, bragging rights are not the only thing that the teams play for. There is usually some form of trophy or object at stake as well.
As the Longhorns won, they are now the owners of the Lone Star Showdown Trophy, at least until next year, when the teams will meet again.
However, the win was not straightforward. The Longhorns struggled on offense at times, partly due to Quinn Ewers' ankle injury, making him somewhat immobile. Ewers ended up throwing for 218 yards, with one touchdown, one interception and a fumble. These two mistakes allowed the Aggies to get back into the game.
Luckily for the Longhorns, Arch Manning exists. He played a pivotal part, scoring Texas' first touchdown on a 15-yard run that only further showcased the immense athletic skill the young quarterback has.
Steve Sarkisian explains his plan for using Arch Manning in the Texas win
Using both of their quarterbacks was all part of the plan for Longhorns coach Steve Sarkisian.
"We’ve had that going for a little bit," Sarkisian said, according to Sports Illustrated. "It was just figuring out the right timing of it. Naturally this week, with Quinn being limited some, Arch got some more reps. We just wanted to keep him engaged in the game and find some opportunities for him.”
Arch Manning was certainly used in the game well. His touchdown run gave the Longhorns a lead in what had been a tight game up to that point.
He was used a few more times. However, at no point did he throw the ball. He was there to make up for Ewers, whose mobility was limited due to his ankle injury.
The plan paid off, and Texas got a win 13 years in the making and moved one victory from winning the SEC championship in its first attempt.
