Oklahoma Sooners safety Billy Bowman Jr. started the Week 7 Red River Rivalry game against the Texas Longhorns by intercepting quarterback Quinn Ewers who was making a comeback from injury. The moment was the only bright spot for the Sooners in a game that the dominant Longhorns won 34-3 with coach Steve Sarkisian's team showing the gulf in class between the two teams.
Bowman Jr. further caused controversy with his comments about Texas "not earning their win" due to the number of injuries and defensive mistakes that the Sooners had to deal with in the heated rivalry game.
The Sooners' safety moved on from the discourse surrounding his comments by holding a community yoga fundraising event for cancer alongside his fiancee, Jayda Coleman.
Coleman posted pictures of Billy Bowman and herself on Instagram while spreading awareness for the event. The post was captioned as follows:
"HỚTWORX: TRAIN LIKE A WARRIOR, FIGHT FOR THE CURE🎀," Coleman wrote.
Billy Bowman Jr. and Jayda Coleman are a power couple
Billy Bowman Jr. and Jayda Coleman are high school sweethearts and both committed to the University of Oklahoma to play football and softball respectively with Coleman the consensus No. 1 prospect in the country in the class of 2020.
As a Sooner, Coleman has been dominant. She led Oklahoma to four consecutive Women's World Series titles and was on the WCWS All-Tournament team for two of those triumphs (2022 & 2023).
For her efforts, Jayda Coleman was named the 2023 Big 12 Player of the Year and went pro playing for the Oklahoma City Spark of the Association of Fastpitch Professionals (AFP) after graduating in May.
During the 2024 SEC media days, the Sooners' safety was full of praise for Jayda Coleman:
“She’s amazing,” Billy Bowman said. “She’s the better half. She’s the better athlete, for all y’all out there. She is. It helps because you have somebody who’s going through the same thing, and so I feel like we know what each other are going through. And we deal with the same issues, literally the same stuff. Winning four national championships is sort of unheard of."
Bowman Jr. has also thrived in Oklahoma receiving All-Big 12 First Team honors last season and was recognized by ESPN as one of the best returning safeties in the Southeastern Conference.
Billy Bowman Jr. was recently nominated for the Paycom Jim Thorpe Award which recognizes the best defensive back in the country, showcasing his pedigree. The Oklahoma Sooners will need every bit of that quality to survive the tough upcoming SEC schedule.
