The Indiana Hoosiers and Notre Dame Fighting Irish met in the first round of the inaugural 12-team College Football Playoff on Friday night. The winner of this matchup moves on to face the Georgia Bulldogs in the CFP quarterfinal in the Sugar Bowl on Jan. 1.
Indiana concluded their regular season with an 11-1 record, finishing their season with a 66-0 blowout victory over Purdue on Nov. 30. Notre Dame also finished the regular season with an 11-1 record, coming off a 49-35 win over USC on Nov. 30.
With both sides looking to stay alive in the playoff, it was Notre Dame who came out swinging in the first half. The Fighting Irish took a 17-3 lead into the locker rooms at halftime and stymied Indiana's offensive unit through the first two quarters.
Notre Dame outlasted a 14-point fourth quarter from Indiana and held on to top the Hoosiers 27-17 in the opening-round matchup. The Fighting Irish will advance to the Sugar Bowl to take on Georgia on Jan. 1.

Notre Dame scored the lone points of the opening quarter on the back of a 98-yard touchdown scamper from Jeremiyah Love. After forcing a punt on the ensuing drive, the Fighting Irish found the end zone in their second consecutive drive, marching 78 yards in 15 plays before Riley Leonard found Jayden Thomas for a five-yard touchdown pass, giving Notre Dame a 14-0 lead.
The two sides exchanged field goals before the half, with Notre Dame taking a 17-3 lead into halftime. On their second drive of the second half, the Irish kicked a 33-yard field goal to extend their lead to 20-3. Notre Dame forced two punts before Riley Leonard found the end zone to cap off a nine-play, 78-yard drive, extending their lead to 27-3.
Indiana punched in two touchdowns down the stretch of the fourth quarter, but fell short, suffering a 27-17 loss in its first CFP game.
