Dylan Raiola has taken college football by storm while leading the Cornhuskers to a 3-0 record. He has registered 670 passing yards and five touchdowns.
Nebraska and its freshman QB face the Illinois Fighting Illini on Friday. The Cornhuskers hope to continue their flawless start, built by a mean defense and Raiola's brilliance.
Matt Rhule stated that Raiola is ready for his biggest test against No. 24 Illinois this week.
Dylan Raiola continues to get Patrick Mahomes comparisons
Dylan Raiola has garnered comparisons to Kansas City Chiefs star Patrick Mahomes. So far, he is justifying the hype.
During an episode of The Rich Eisen Show, Nebraska coach Matt Rhule said he noticed the parallels between Raiola and Mahomes while on a recruitment trip.
"When I got here, I went and watched [Raiola] throw in high school, and I texted our recruiting guy. He said, 'How's he look?' And I said, 'He's Mahomes.' And not just the mannerisms. His arm, his ability to make throws off platform, just everything. That was my first instinct. So now it's kind of funny, to see everyone— I can't look at Instagram without seeing someone putting them side by side. But the great thing is he's a winner, just like Patrick is."
However, some fans, including former NFL standout Antonio Brown, feel the comparison is overblown.
In an interview with ESPN, Mahomes spoke about Raiola, with whom he worked out with during the college football offseason.
"It's cool, honestly. I was that guy, grew up watching players. I loved Alex Rodriguez. I played shortstop and tried to make plays just like that. It helped me become the athlete that I am. It's just telling me that I'm getting a little old. He's a great football player and I think he's going to make his own stamp on the game. I think you've seen that early in his career."
Raiola's comparisons to one of the NFL's greatest signal callers can either help or hinder his performance. It will be interesting to see how the true freshman develops behind center at Nebraska and beyond.
