The Florida State Seminoles will remain in the ACC at least until the 2025-26 season. FSU and Clemson have both expressed interest in leaving the ACC, and have filed lawsuits in hopes of avoiding the humongous exit fee.
However, some major news came out on Monday involving the future of FSU and Clemson ahead of the ACC media days.
Is FSU staying in the ACC?
College football insider Pete Thamel took to X to announce that FSU and Clemson didn't notify the ACC of their plans to leave ahead of the 2025-26 year, which means both schools will be locked into the conference until then.
"Have been told by multiple sources that there’s no expectation for Florida State or Clemson to notify the ACC they intend to leave by the Aug. 15 deadline to depart after the upcoming year. That’s the deadline to declare intentions to exit for the 2025-26 year," Thamel posted on X.
However, Thamel posted another tweet saying this was expected due to the ongoing legal battle as both are continuing their legal battles in hopes of getting out of the conference.
"They are both in the throes of ongoing legal battles regarding the ACC’s grant of rights and withdrawal fees, so there’s been little expectation of imminent movement."
FSU and Clemson sued the ACC to challenge the exit fee as both schools wanted to leave the conference without paying the hefty fee. Both schools have expressed frustration with the ACC's media rights deal which runs through 2036.
"Our goal would be to continue to stay in the ACC, but staying in the ACC under the current situation is hard for us to figure out how we remain competitive unless there were a major change in the revenue distribution within the conference," FSU president Richard McCullough said back in 2023, via ESPN. "That has not happened. Those discussions are ongoing at all times..."
"My current assessment of the situation after very deep analysis is I believe FSU will have to at some point consider very seriously leaving the ACC unless there were a radical change to the revenue distribution."
Following the lawsuit, FSU has been linked to the Big Ten and SEC. However, both conferences have said they have no plans to expand. But, the Seminoles are locked into the ACC, at least for two more years.
FSU will open its 2024 season on August 24 against Georgia Tech.
