The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (5-3) are on the road to play the Virginia Tech Hokies (4-3) on Saturday, October 26. However, quarterback Haynes King's injury status is one of the big questions ahead of the matchup.
Is Haynes King playing today?
No, Georgia Tech's starting quarterback, Haynes King, will unlikely play any part against Virginia Tech on Saturday.
King didn't play in last week's loss to Notre Dame due to a right shoulder injury.
Georgia Tech coach Brent Key says the 23-year-old QB is day-to-day ahead of the game against the Hokies, but it's unlikely he will play.
“(King), if we were to play right now, it’d be a no,” Key said of King’s status, via Atlanta Journal Constiution. “We’re still gonna keep him day-to-day, but it’s a capital ‘H’ hopeful that he would be able to go. Those things do have different timetables. He’s improving every day. If it was something that definitely would be out right now we’d say it. But I’m still holding on hope.”
When the injury happened, Key called King a tough kid and called him day-to-day leading up to the Notre Dame game. But he eventually didn't even dress in the loss.
"He's a tough kid," Key said. "Day-to-day with it right now. He's going to be out there (at practice Tuesday). We'll see how it goes; we'll see how the week progresses. It's that time of year. Everybody's banged-up — our team, other teams. So survival of the fittest at this point."
How has Haynes King performed for Georgia Tech this season?
This season, King has gone 136-for-191 for 1,568 yards, eight touchdowns, and one interception. He has been vital to Georgia Tech's 5-3 record.
With King likely not playing, Zach Pyron will start for the Yellow Jackets. Against Notre Dame, Pyron went 20-for-36 for 269 yards, a touchdown, and two interceptions.
Pyron is in his third year at Georgia Tech and has gone 25-for-43 for 333 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions this season.
Georgia Tech is a 10.5-point underdog on the road against Virginia Tech.
