The Kansas Jayhawks could deal with the conference realignment cycle because of rumors that they could leave the Big 12. The news comes from Greg Flugaur, who initially broke the news that Southern California (USC) Trojans were leaving the Pac-12 and joining the Big Ten.
He posted on his YouTube channel that the Southeastern Conference wants to expand again and that the Kansas Jayhawks would be part of the move. While this is nothing concrete, it does raise some eyebrows as the University of Kansas is out of nowhere. Flugaur was a few weeks ahead of major media outlets for the Trojans news, so there could be something to his report.
Do take it with a grain of salt as nothing has been reported by any major media outlets as of this writing.
Should Greg Sankey and the SEC be interested in the Kansas Jayhawks?
The Kansas Jayhawks to the SEC is coming out of left field for a few reasons. One is that SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey has been very selective in adding schools to the conference. The Oklahoma Sooners and the Texas Longhorns are joining the SEC beginning this college football season.
The SEC has been focusing on premier college football programs instead of the Big 12's approach of looking for programs solid in multiple sports. The Kansas Jayhawks are not in a position where they can be viewed as an elite college football program. And with the geographical location difference compared to the rest of the SEC, this feels off.
Discussions surrounding Kansas to the SEC are possible, but it seems out of the structure that Greg Sankey has been utilizing for the conference's success. It will be interesting to see if this rumor goes away or if there happens to be smoke in the fire.
