Mike Shanahan is a legendary football coach. During his long career, he led numerous college football and NFL teams to success, most notably the Denver Broncos, with whom he won two Super Bowls.
However, there is another coach named Mike Shanahan currently operating in the college football world. This Mike Shanahan is the current offensive coordinator with the Indiana Hoosiers.
These two coaches share the same name. But is this just a coincidence, or are they related?
Is Mike Shanahan related to Mike Shanahan?
Mike Shanahan (the former Denver Broncos coach) has two children. A daughter named Crystal and a son named Kyle.
Kyle Shanahan has also followed his father's footsteps and has gone into coaching. He has been the coach of the San Francisco 49ers since 2017, leading them to two Super Bowls and four NFC Championship games.
The Hoosiers' Mike Shanahan is younger than Kyle Shanahan. However, there is no relation between the two families, despite sharing the same last name.
Mike Shanahan's coaching style and record
Before joining the Indiana Hoosiers program, Mike Shanahan was with the James Madison Dukes.
The Dukes play in the Sun Belt Conference, where they are one of the stronger programs in the conference for football. Before that, they played in the Coastal Conference.
Shanahan was with the Dukes from 2018 and would leave before the 2024 season. During this period, he was part of a team that was able to win three conference championships.
Shanahan has gained a reputation for being able to get the most out of his offense. This has been recognized by some of the players that he has coached at both James Madison and currently at Indiana.
For example, tight end Zach Horton told Sports Illustrated earlier this year when Mike Shanahan was announced as the new Hoosiers OC:
"They’re (Mike Shanahan) really good at finding the mismatches, seeing what defenses do and what their habits are and attacking the weak areas. I also like how they get athletes in space, they want to get the athletes the ball and let them work. They’re really smart but also really fundamental.”
Currently, the Hoosiers offense is very strong. They are currently 3-0 and have convincingly won all of their games by large margins.
