Quarterback Quinn Ewers is a key contributor to the Texas Longhorns's status as one of the top teams this season and a national championship contender.
This week, the No.3 Longhorns (9-1, 5-1 SEC) face the Kentucky Wildcats (4-6, 1-6) on Saturday. A win here would help Texas in a tight race for the two spots in the SEC Championship game.
Is Quinn Ewers Playing against the Wildcats?
Texas coach Steve Sarkisian did give the media an update on the health of Ewers on Thursday.
"Quinn is the healthiest he's been since the injury," Sarkisian said.
During the Longhorns's 56-7 win over the UTSA Roadrunners in week three, Quinn Ewers suffered an abdominal injury and was sidelined for several weeks.
He would return against rivals Oklahoma Sooners, and after a shaky start, Ewers would thrive. Since returning from his injury, the QB has dominated some games (like the wins against Florida and Vanderbilt). But he struggled in others, such as the games against the No. 5 Georgia Bulldogs and last week's narrow 20-10 win against Arkansas.
This has raised questions from Longhorns fans about why Ewers sometimes plays despite his occasion struggles. These calls have only intensified since his return from injury, as Texas fans have had a taste of his replacement.
This is Arch Manning, one of the most talked about and highest-rated quarterback prospects in recent years. Fans saw what he could do as a starter when he filled in for Ewers, and now they want to see him weekly.
However, this is unlikely to happen unless Quinn Ewers gets injured again. The QB will continue to be the Longhorns's starter and will play against the Kentucky Wildcats this weekend.
What does Quinn Ewers need to do to defeat Kentucky?
The Kentucky vs. Texas game will likely be Quinn Ewers's final home game, as there are rumors that the player might enter the 2025 NFL Draft, ending his spell in College Football.
The quarterback struggled against a strong Arkansas defense on Saturday, registering 176 yards.
Against Kentucky, Quinn Ewers will have to up the ante if he aims to power Texas Longhorns to victory.
However, if he struggles, especially early in the game, do not be surprised if Arch Manning replaces him later.
